CS100A – Cued Speech for American English with Flex Check-Ins

Anyone, regardless of background knowledge of or experience with hearing loss, who wants to learn Cued Speech for professional or personal use.

• We offer CS100A as an 8-week course, and you will schedule your four Module Flex Check-In sessions by selecting available dates and times through the Flex Check-In Calendar under the “MY ACCOUNT” tab on the Cue College website.
• You will be given access to the course at the time you register and should start your self-study journey at least 5 days prior to the start of the first check-in session.  You will continue to have access to the course for an entire year from the time you purchased the course so that you may continue to review and practice what you learned in this course.
• You will be asked to take 3 multiple choice quizzes at the appropriate points in the course to check your knowledge of the Cued Speech system, including checks of your ability to describe how a wide variety of words would be cued by matching each with its respective correct Cue Notation.
• You will receive a Cue College Certificate of Completion for CS100A within a short time after the conclusion of the 8-week course offering period, as long as you have met all of the criteria explained in the Course Description section above.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, including:  the 4 Flex Check-In live Zoom sessions with an instructor; self-study of all written content; and completion of the recommended drills, practice activities, and quizzes, students will be able to:

1. 1. 1. Describe the system of Cued Speech for American English, including:
         • The 8 consonant handshapes, 4 vowel placements, and the phonemes that correspond to each;
         • General rules for cueing handshapes at placements in conjunction with the natural mouth movements of spoken English; and
         • The finite set of guidelines (called “Cue Tips” in the course) that complete the system and enable cueing of the entire phoneme stream of English in a way that accurately conveys the intended message at normal conversational speed. 
      2. Demonstrate the ability to cue words and short phrases, representing the entire spectrum of phonemes that comprise the spoken American English language, with accuracy and clarity, without regard for speed.
      3. Demonstrate correct form, posture, and synchronization of cues with corresponding mouth movements when cueing words and short phrases.
      4. Describe the stages of fluency development, strategies for fluency development, and free resources that are available for practicing cueing and increasing fluency.

 

COMING SOON! To earn ASHA CEUs, RID Professional Studies CEUs, or IL EI Credential Credit Hours you must complete all requirements listed above for earning a Cue College Certificate of Completion, plus the following:

• 1. Complete and submit the Acknowledgement CEU form found in your “Welcome Letter” email
  2. Complete all of the above requirements listed above and the final Course Evaluation no later than 2 days AFTER the end of your registered course offering.

Upon successful completion of all course requirements and criteria, learners will be issued a Certificate of Completion. Individuals who do not meet both time requirements will not be recommended for ASHA CEUs/RID PS CEUs/IL EI Hours. No partial credit will be provided. However, exceptions may be made under certain circumstances. Learners facing extenuating situations are encouraged to contact the Cue College Administrator for review and consideration.

Sandy has been an NCSA-certified instructor for over 20 years and a cueing parent since 1991. In addition to her many years of teaching experience — she has presented at many professional conferences over the years on a wide range of topics especially focused on best practices for use of Cued Speech in the home with children from infancy through adulthood. Sandy has experience in adapting the Cued Speech system for American English for use in cueing Spanish and Hebrew. Sandy is not a certified transliterator, but understands the basics of cued language transliteration to the extent that she can assist a parent in transliterating for their child in normal everyday interactions where the child needs that access.

Rachel is a native deaf cuer and a fluent ASL user. She became a certified instructor in 2018 and has taught Cued American English workshops for parents and professionals as part of the national Early Hearing Detection and Intervention conference and nonprofit programming. Rachel has extensive experience teaching children how to cue as part of Cue Camp Mechuwana, Arlington County Public Schools, and her own four CODAs (Children of Deaf Adults). Rachel has also presented Cued American English at state-level conferences, tutored her personal acquaintances and family members, and taught beginner courses using the Cue College CS100 format. Rachel has learned Hebrew and Spanish using the Cued Speech system.

Special Interests: Rachel has volunteered as part of the National Cued Speech Association’s Materials Committee to develop children’s learning materials for Cued American English. Rachel is an active member of the “Cuemmunity” and has a deaf native cuer perspective, as well as a parent’s perspective.
