CS100A – Cued Speech for American English with Flex Check-Ins provides the foundational knowledge and practical skills needed to accurately represent all 40 phonemes of spoken English using the eight consonant handshapes, four vowel placements, and essential cueing rules. Through four structured modules and 14 clear, engaging lessons, you will learn to visually convey spoken English naturally and accurately at the phoneme, word, phrase, and sentence levels—with or without voice.

Unlike our CS100 Self-Study course, CS100A combines independent learning with personalized instructor guidance and structured completion expectations. You will have up to 8 weeks to complete all four modules, including the course evaluation, and schedule and use four 30-minute Flex Check-In sessions with an NCSA-certified instructor at key milestones throughout your learning journey. These sessions provide opportunities to ask questions, receive feedback, and strengthen your cueing skills as you progress.

You will also receive one year of course access, allowing you to revisit lessons, practice, and continue developing your fluency long after completing the course.

Whether you are a parent, educator, speech-language professional, or other individual supporting someone with communication and language needs—including those with hearing loss—CS100A prepares you to apply Cued Speech in your home, workplace, or educational setting.

Description

Content:

CS100A is your first—and most essential—step toward learning the Cued Speech system for American English. This course provides foundational information on what Cued Speech is, with a brief discussion of its history and benefits.  But, primarily, this course teaches the handshapes, placements, and rules that will enable the learner to visually convey English accurately and naturally, as it is spoken (with or without voice), at the phoneme, word, phrase, and sentence levels.  CS100A is different from our CS100 Self-Study course in that it provides instructor support and holds the learner accountable for completing the course within 8 weeks.

This course allows you to progress independently through four structured modules while scheduling four 30-minute Flex Check-In sessions with one of our NCSA-certified instructors at key milestones throughout the course.  YOU WILL HAVE UP TO 8 WEEKS FROM DATE OF PURCHASE TO COMPLETE ALL 4 Modules, including the course evaluation and to SCHEDULE and USE THE FOUR 30-Minute Flex Check-In SESSIONS with your instructor.  Just as with our CS100 course, you will still have a one-year subscription to the CS100A course, giving you the flexibility to revisit lessons and continue practicing to increase your fluency.

Course Agenda and Access:
  • After registering, you will receive a Welcome Letter email with instructions on how to access your course in our LearnWorlds Online Campus.
  • Once registered, Flex Check-Ins are scheduled through the “My Account” tab, where you can access the CS100A-Flex Check-In Session Calendar. Each session is limited to one participant to ensure individualized support.
  • The Student-Timed agenda will be accessible via a link in your Welcome Letter and on the Home Page of your course.  This should be downloaded and read ASAP, as it provides an outline of topics to be covered each week and preparation required before each online class session.
  • Learners are expected to view and complete each Module course content, in accordance with instructions in the Student Timed Agenda, preferably at least 1 calendar DAY PRIOR to each of your scheduled flex check-in sessions.
  • Course access lasts for 1 year from the date of purchase for ongoing review and practice. Renewal options are available at the end of your subscription period if you wish to maintain access.

  • CS100A is organized into four learning modules, which include 14 structured lessons that teach the 8 consonant handshapes and 4 vowel placements of Cued American English—one of more than 65 languages adapted to the Cued Speech system. Course Objectives

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, including:  the four 30-Minute Flex Check-In live Zoom sessions with an instructor; self-study of all written content, graphics and videos; and completion of the recommended drills, practice activities, and quizzes, students will be able to:

      1. Describe the system of Cued Speech for American English, including:
        • The 8 consonant handshapes, 4 vowel placements, and the phonemes that correspond to each;
        • General rules for cueing handshapes at placements in conjunction with the natural mouth movements of spoken English; and
        • The finite set of guidelines (called “Cue Tips” in the course) that complete the system and enable cueing of the entire phoneme stream of English in a way that accurately conveys the intended message — ultimately at normal conversational speed, after sufficient practice time over several months.
      2. Demonstrate the ability to cue syllables, words and short phrases, representing the entire spectrum of phonemes that comprise the spoken American English language, with accuracy and clarity, without regard for speed.
      3. Demonstrate correct form, posture, and synchronization of cues with corresponding mouth movements when cueing words and short phrases.
      4. Describe the stages of fluency development, strategies for fluency development, and free resources that are available for practicing cueing and increasing fluency.
